Hiking Route Linhares da Beira / Piódão (79,21 km)

Grande Rota (GR22) Aldeias Históricas 

This Hiking Route takes you along the Serra Estrela Mountain Range and his fascinating granite rocks.
You pass old villages with granite stone houses and stables, constructed in passed centuries.
Linhares da Beira, Vale do Rossim, Sabugueiro (highest village of Portugal), Sra. do Desterro,
Lapa dos Dinheiros, Valezim, Vide to Piódão (Serra do Açor)

 

This Hiking Route is indicated and passes only 500 m behind the Chapel of Rio de Mel,
connecting Valezim and Vide, possible to walk in both directions!

 

Traditionel Schist-Villages

 

In the Serra do Açor you find traditional  Schist Villages

Aldeias do Xisto de Portugal

Aldeia das Dez, Faijão, Vila Cova de Alva, Benfeita,…

 

The schist is a stone which splits easily and creates a flat surface.

Mainly in this region this “horizontal” stone became the ideal building material for houses and stables.

Towns to visit

 

Oliveira do Hospital is only 15 km away from Rio de Mel., with all necessary shopping facilities,
Hospital, Pharmacy etc.pp. In Bobadela you can visit Roman Ruins, Amphitheatre and also some Celtic Dolmen.

 

Seia is only 25 km away with all shopping facilities and plenty of interesting spots to visit:
Toy Museum, Bread Museum, Electricity Museum, CISE (Interpretation Center Serra da Estrela), CineEco.


Covilhã
is a typical “mountain city” about 55 km away on the east side of the Serra da Estrela.
You find all big shopping facilities as well as plenty of interesting spots to visit like Universidade Interior,
Wool Museum, Burel Factory or Royal Factories of Serra da Estrela, Cheese Museum of Pêraboa


Coimbra
is only 85 km away, an old university town worth to visit, especially the university and its library
(one of the oldest of Europe) or Conimbriga, a Roman Town in ruins.


Viseu
is about 60 km away, nice to visit the historical center of the town,
also all kind of shopping can be done very easily.
